Lesson No. 60: EQ Lunch & Learn - Resilience

I didn’t purpose to be in the space that I find myself in.  God plucked me from the path that I had set out for myself & set me on an alternative journey. At the start it all appeared somewhat ‘accidental’ but I know now that it was no accident, rather His design, His purpose for my life…

So now that I am here, these are my confessions…the lessons I am learning about being a woman in business, building an empire, one brick at a time…

Lesson No 60: EQ Lunch ‘n Learn

We live in turbulent times.  There is so much complexity.  Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, stress has been on the rise.  We have incredible technology to communicate with each other, yet people feel more & more isolated.  This combination makes people more volatile, more impatient, more likely to fight, flight or freeze.

The emotional challenge has been steadily growing around the world – and coronavirus has made it worse. Maybe once-upon-a-time there was little need to actively learn the skills of Emotional Intelligence, but in this world of growing complexity – EQ has become an essential skill for employees.

I was excited to host our inaugural EQ Lunch ‘n Learn Series. The EQ Lunch ‘n Learn Series aims to provide employees with insight into how they can utilise Emotional Intelligence as a skill to successfully navigate the challenges & changes that they face. Every month, I will host a monthly chat for employees who want to:

  • Get practical insights about Emotional Intelligence & learn how it can be more important than IQ for career growth.
  • Gain an understanding on how to utilise emotions as a strategic resource to navigate through challenges faced in the workplace.
  • Receive tools to build the emotional muscle necessary to thrive in these uncertain & unpredictable times.

This month our theme was Resilience – How To Leverage EQ To Build Resilience and I had a delightful chat with Tessie Omulo, PR & Communications Manager at Centonomy, Susan Chege, Head – People & Culture at Jambojet and Michael Oyier, Executive Coach at Serenity Group.

Resilience is defined as ‘the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties’ and it is a skill that is essential as we navigate this season of heightened uncertainty.

As organisations make sweeping changes in response to the pandemic – how can employees find that ‘inner toughness’ required to forge forward & or pivot?

Our key takeaways were:

  • Be clear about who you are, where you are and whose you are. This will give you the fuel you need to push forward.
  • The magic word is to START! Start where you are and just focus on the next step.
  • Continue reviewing your goals to ensure viability. Don't be afraid to change the goal or the approach to achieving the goal

To me – resilience is just taking one more step.  It’s digging deep & utilising your emotions to propel yourself forward and not allow yourself to get stuck.
