I didn’t purpose to be in the space that I find myself in.  God plucked me from the path that I had set out for myself & set me on an alternative journey. At the start it all appeared somewhat ‘accidental’ but I know now that it was no accident, rather His design, His purpose for my life…

So now that I am here, these are my confessions…the lessons I am learning about being a woman in business, building an empire, one brick at a time…

Lesson No 68EQ Lunch ‘n Learn – Successfully Navigating Change

There is no change without self-awareness”

EPISODE 3: Successfully Navigating Change

Continuous change has become the new normal. Never before in our lifetime have we experienced this level of collective emotions, where we are so focused on a future that is uncertain, and anxious about what’s next.

I hosted the 3rd edition of the EQ Lunch ‘n Learn yesterday, and it was yet another awesome conversation about Emotional Intelligence and how our emotions impact our ability to successfully navigate change.

My guests – Enahoro Okhae, MD Pause Factory, Nigeria and Amani Shayo, Project Manager at Empower Ltd, Tanzania shared invaluable insights.

We often fail to change as a result of the disguised benefits of staying the way we are (we do not admit this to ourselves.) We would rather stay in an uncomfortable known situation than change to a more comfortable, but an uncertain situation.

Change is just as much emotional as it is rational. In order for you to move forward, both your head & heart must be in agreement. Emotions drive behaviour, and whilst the emotional side of change is messy and uncomfortable, real change is powered by feelings.

My key take-aways from this month’s event speak to the power of our emotions:

  1. We are where we are in the world because of change. Each day people are daring to change. Dare to step outside of your comfort zone – you will be surprised at what is on the other side of the change

  1. Emotions are data but they are not directives.  Pay attention to how you feel, use the insight BUT remember that you have a choice

  1. We are driven by the bigger picture. Knowing what the end will look like, drives us forward.

I have learned that as hard as it is to navigate change, it’s often worth the effort to push through the emotions that have the power to hold you back.

Emotional Intelligence is being more aware, more intentional & more purposeful! Emotional Intelligence is at the heart of leadership.
